Where to Eat on Alabama’s Lakes? (Part 2)

This week on the heart attack tour we’re visiting the Smorgasbord Restaurant at Riverside Campground. This joint has a long history of great food and even better deserts. It’s changed hands recently – was formerly known as The Cove at Riverside Restaurant, and recently rebranded under new ownership as The Smorgasbord Restaurant. Same location, even better service! Googling the former will probably get you to the spot easier, or just google Riverside Campground in Cedar Bluff. When you pull in amongst the pine trees and campers you can’t miss the folksy, Southern gem sitting off the gravel parking lot to the left. Loosen your belt and step inside!

this is the old logo, but if you see this on Google, you’re in the right place!

Southern, no frills fare is on the menu, and you won’t leave hungry. While I’ve never had a bad meal here, some of my favorites are the fried catfish and country fried steak with gravy. But the real attraction is the desert menu. It’s massive! I’m told the sweet woman who made the many varieties of cakes, pies and cobblers from scratch daily is still in action cranking out a diabetes-inducing playlist that varies day to day! I’ve never had the same desert twice, and honestly, they’re all my favorite.

The hours of operation are a little tricky to discern under the new ownership due mostly to Google’s slowness in updating info, but generally if you show up Thursday through Sunday around lunch or dinner time, you should get fed. Next time you’re near Weiss Lake and looking for some rib-sticking delight, swing by the Smorgasbord!
